Adams był architektem (jak jego ojciec) w brytyjskim urzędzie celnym (Customs Department of the Inland Revenue Office). W latach 1853-1858 wraz ze swym bratem, Arthurem Adamsem, opublikował trójtomową monografię o moluskach, w której opisano wiele nowych gatunków. Było to w XIX wieku. W XX wieku jako dzieło standardowe, w tym w odniesieniu do klasyfikacji.
Wprowadził wraz ze swoim bratem order muszli Pectinida.
